RedHead Re-Manufacturing Process:
- Machining out the housings and installing needle bearings
- Flame-spraying or replacing the shafts as needed
- Installing new control valves on some applications
- Custom fitting each worm & piston assembly with special ordered, precise over-sized ball bearings.
- Install every sector shaft on a lathe to check for straight and true
- Polish the sealing surface to a higher polish than new.
- All gear boxes are sent out in center position
RedHead Steering Gear only uses the highest quality seals. All seals are either O.E.M. or produced by two high quality, long time suppliers of our industry.
Probably one of the most unique and important things about RedHead Steering processes is they custom fit every single worm and piston assembly with new precision fit steel balls. This is a process not matched by any other company in the industry. This process is very important. The machining tolerances of the original manufacturing leave a small and varying amount of play that can not be corrected in any other way.
How do I purge air, or bleed, my steering gear box system?
- After installing the gearbox, fill the system with fluid.
- Raise the front wheels off the ground, DO NOT start the vehicle.
- Work the steering wheel back and forth, lock to lock, 15-20 times.
- Leave the vehicle sit (overnight is best) AT LEAST 2 hours
- Top the pump reservoir off again.
- Work the steering wheel back and forth again 7-10 times
- Have a person in the vehicle and another at the pump reservoir with a container of fluid & funnel ready to pour if necessary.
- Instruct the person in the vehicle to start the engine. As soon as this happens, if the fluid level drops, be ready to pour in more fluid. The level must be kept at an almost full level or it will suck in air again.
- If this procedure is followed properly, the air problem will be solved.
