Video Transcript: How to Safely Remove Kaiser Jeep Headlight Retainers
Looking to remove headlight retainers for your Kaiser Jeep? I was working late in the shop and came across a little opportunity to do a little teaching and academic moment on this very topic - lucky you!
A lot of times we have customers reach out for Kaiser style headlight buckets because they bend them up trying to take take them out and I just wanted to show you a way to not bend them up.
The Kaiser Jeep in the video tutorial is a 1963. Early models actually had a gasket in the back and they sealed these things in tight.
A lot of times they don't come out easily, so people take pry bars, stick them in, and try to start ripping...
and of course, you mess up your grill support, and you do a lot of damage to a bunch of other areas in the meantime.
Heat Management:
Time for my favorite subject: heat management. If I push on it, it's freaking glue. It's been in there for 50 plus years, and she doesn't want it to come out.
So here's something simple you can do with your heat gun to help you remove your Kaiser Jeep headlight retainers.
Keep moving your heat gun gently back and forth. The heat gun in the tutorial is not an expensive heat gun. I bought it probably 20 years ago. I believe the temperature output is about 1800 degrees or so.
You want to be careful because the area you're heating up can get too hot so you want to keep dancing the heat gun up and down, essentially just encompassing the area. And as the area heats up, you'll start to see a little bubble or a few bubbles.
With patience, your Kaiser Jeep headlight retainer will slowly start to come out.
It's just like being on the first date. You force too hard, you're not going anywhere with anybody. So be nice and gentle and eventually she'll come out for you without you causing more damage to your Kaiser Jeep.
So please, no pry bar. For any further questions, please feel free to leave a comment below!
