What is the difference between a key and non-key steering column? A steering column in a vehicle can come in two main types regarding ignition system placement: with a key (keyed) and without a key (non-keyed or keyless).
-
Keyed Steering Column: This type of steering column has an ignition lock cylinder integrated into it. Turning the key in the cylinder activates the ignition switch and starts the vehicle. Keyed steering columns have been standard in vehicles for many decades. They provide a direct mechanical interface for starting the car, engaging the steering lock, and sometimes for additional functions like steering wheel adjustment.
- Non-Keyed (Keyless) Steering Column: A non-keyed or keyless steering column does not have an ignition lock cylinder for a key. Instead, these vehicles use a push-button start system that operates in conjunction with a smart key (a key fob).
